Performance study of the fast timing Cherenkov detector based on a microchannel plate PMT

2017

Prototype of the fast timing Cherenkov detector, applicable in high-energy collider experiments, has been developed basing on the modified Planacon XP85012 MCP-PMT and fused silica radiators. We present the reasons and description of the MCP-PMT modification, timing and amplitude characteristics of the prototype including the summary of the detector's response on particle hits at oblique angles and MCP-PMT performance at high illumination rates. peerReviewed

Neutrino oscillation studies with IceCube-DeepCore

2016

IceCube, a gigaton-scale neutrino detector located at the South Pole, was primarily designed to search for astrophysical neutrinos with energies of PeV and higher. This goal has been achieved with the detection of the highest energy neutrinos to date. At the other end of the energy spectrum, the DeepCore extension lowers the energy threshold of the detector to approximately 10 GeV and opens the door for oscillation studies using atmospheric neutrinos. An analysis of the disappearance of these neutrinos has been completed, with the results produced being complementary with dedicated oscillation experiments. Following a review of the detector principle and performance, the method used to make…

Real-time Fluorescence Measurement of Enterovirus Uncoating

2019

Viruses need to open, i.e., uncoat, in order to release their genomes for efficient replication and translation. Especially for non-enveloped viruses, such as enteroviruses, the cues leading to uncoating are less well known. The status of the virus has previously been observed mainly by transmission electron microscopy using negative staining, cryo electron microscopy, X-ray crystallography or gradient separation (reviewed in Tuthill et al., 2010, Myllynen et al., 2016, Ruokolainen et al., 2019). However, monitoring of uncoating has been limited by the lack of methods detecting dynamic changes of the virions. Here, we present a real-time fluorescence based protocol, which detects the viral …

Removal of streaking artefact in the images of the Pierre Auger Observatory infra-red cameras

2011

In this paper the problem of removing concentric semi-circular stripe artefacts induced by the operating hardware of the infra red cameras of the Pierre Auger Observatory, is tackled. The method builds on top of a recent algorithm for the removal of artefacts, which presents a robust filter, obtained as a combination of Wavelet and Fourier analysis, capable of eliminating horizontal and vertical stripes in images, while trying to preserve structural features and quantitative values of the image. The method requires several parameters which have been tuned by an exhaustive test on a large set of images. The results show that the method is capable to satisfactorily remove the stripe artefacts.

Limits on the diffuse flux of ultra-high energy neutrinos using the Pierre Auger Observatory

2012

Abstract The surface detector array of the Pierre Auger Observatory is sensitive to ultra-high energy neutrinos in the cosmic radiation. These particles can interact close to ground, both through charged and neutral currents in the atmosphere (down-going) and, for tau neutrinos, through the Earth-skimming mechanism (up-going) where a tau lepton is produced in the Earth's crust that can emerge and decay in the atmosphere. Both types of neutrino-induced events produce an inclined shower that can be identified by the presence of a broad time structure of signals in the water-Cherenkov detectors. Using data collected from the surface detector array of the Pierre Auger Observatory, we present th…

Measurement of the Proton-Air Cross Section ats=57  TeVwith the Pierre Auger Observatory

2012

We report a measurement of the proton-air cross section for particle production at the center-of-mass energy per nucleon of 57 TeV. This is derived from the distribution of the depths of shower maxima observed with the Pierre Auger Observatory: systematic uncertainties are studied in detail. Analyzing the tail of the distribution of the shower maxima, a proton-air cross section of [505 +/- 22(stat)(-36)(+28)(syst)] mb is found.

Automatic analysis of speckle photography fringes

1997

Speckle interferometry is a technique adequate to metrological problems such as the measurement of object deformation. An automatic system of analysis of such measurements is given; it consists of a motorized x-y plate positioner controlled by computer, a CCD video camera, and software for image analysis. A fringe-recognition algorithm determines the spacing and orientation of the fringes and permits the calculation of the magnitude and direction of the displacement of the analyzed object point in images with variable degrees of illumination. For a 256 x 256 pixel image resolution, the procedure allows one to analyze from three fringes to a number of fringes that corresponds to 3 pixels/fri…

Constraining the neutrino emission of gravitationally lensed Flat-Spectrum Radio Quasars with ANTARES data

2014

This paper proposes to exploit gravitational lensing effects to improve the sensitivity of neutrino telescopes to the intrinsic neutrino emission of distant blazar populations. This strategy is illustrated with a search for cosmic neutrinos in the direction of four distant and gravitationally lensed Flat-Spectrum Radio Quasars. The magnification factor is estimated for each system assuming a singular isothermal profile for the lens. Based on data collected from 2007 to 2012 by the ANTARES neutrino telescope, the strongest constraint is obtained from the lensed quasar B0218+357, providing a limit on the total neutrino luminosity of this source of 1.08×10^46 erg s-1. This limit is about one o…
